Introduction
After the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD Pompeii became buried and forgotten. The volcano was still quite active and the town of Pompeii remained only in people's memories as 'la citta' - the exact location of the town became lost.

The story of the discovery of Pompeii, and its subsequent excavation, is a tale spanning over 400 years. It can best be told through the sequence of archaeologists appointed to uncover its secrets, laid buried with this ancient town for nearly 2000 years.
