Fontana
In 1593 Count Muzzio Tutavilla was digging a channel to take water from the river Sarno to his villa at Torre Annunziata. While his men were digging, the architect Fontana came across some ruined buildings and an inscription 'decurio Pompeis'.

This inscription was thought to refer to the famous Roman general, Pompey the Great, when in fact it referred to a town councillor of Pompeii. As a result of this misunderstanding, nothing was done, the inscription was forgotten and Pompeii remained buried and undiscovered.
