The Discovery and Excavation of Pompeii    [Print whole story]

Karl Weber
The excavation of Pompeii improved, however, with the arrival of a Swiss architect, Karl Weber. Although he worked under Alcubierre and was undermined by him, he brought important innovations to the excavation. Unlike Alcubierre, Weber excavated area by area and succeeded in finding the Herculaneum Gate.

Francesco La Vega
Weber died in 1763 and his place in the excavation was taken by a Spanish engineer, Francesco La Vega. Under him, with all the excavations centred on Pompeii, the Small Theatre (Odeon), Large Theatre, Temple of Isis and the gladiator barracks were all discovered.

Antonio Bonnuci
In 1815 Francesco La Vega died and he was replaced by Antonio Bonnuci. During this period, the excavations at Pompeii slowed down quite considerably, although some important discoveries were still made. These included the forum and the House of the Faun. Perhaps the most exciting discovery was made on 24 October 1831 when a huge mosaic depicting Alexander the Great at the Battle of Issus was found in the House of the Faun.
