Vittorio Spinazzola
Between 1910 and 1924 Vittorio Spinazzola was the director of the excavations and was responsible for excavating the Via dell' Abbondanza. Some of the finds he made were the laundry of Stephanus and the garden of Loreius Tiburtinus.

Amedeo Maiuri
In 1924 Amedeo Maiuri became director of the excavations at Pompeii and by using stratigraphic excavation which involves digging in layers, he learnt a lot about early Pompeii. He remained as director until 1961.

During his time at Pompeii, the town was bombed by accident during the Second World War. One hundred and sixty two bombs were dropped on Pompeii by the Allies which damaged the city quite badly. His work was also hampered by another eruption of Mount Vesuvius.
